Handy Information When Relocating
Whether you have landed a dream job for 6 or 12 months, or whether you are going travelling and need to move out of rental accommodation temporarily there’s an awful lot to do before you can get on that plane!
Moving out of the Uk for whatever reason can be a very stressful and difficult time, not to mention an emotional one, so knowing what needs to be done when and where can really help lighten the load. Here’s a few tips you should consider before you leave.
Local Laws & Customs
Ensure you know as much about your destination country as possible before you arrive. Read up on all the local customs and regulations so you don’t get caught out early on and to avoid any unexpected nasty surprises at Departures and Arrivals because of items you have packed that you shouldn’t have.
Australia, for example bans the import of live animals, plants and certain types of foodstuffs, spices and wooden objects. If you are travelling overseas and want to know what you can and can’t bring back to Australia, use the web app Can I bring it back?

There are a whole host of different rules for accessing healthcare overseas than in the UK, so make sure that you’ve got good health insurance in place before you fly.
Free Healthare in Europe
Apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). An EHIC gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare on temporary stays in other European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free. It will cover immediate and clinically necessary state-funded treatment until your planned return home to the UK.
For more information about what is covered in each country, see the country-by-country guide.
Notify the UK government
You may to make sure that you’ve told organisations like HMRC, the Social Security Office and the Department of Work and Pensions that you’re spending some time abroad out of the UK, as well as informing your local GP.
Some airports charge tax to land, so if you are travelling to many destinations make a note of each country’s tax charges.
Additionally, ensure as well that you’ve read up on the different taxes that will apply if you are moving to a property temporarily for any length of time, as well back in the UK so you don’t get caught out.
Always get advice when relocating your pet abroad
You may want to bring your dog, cat or any other pet with you so make sure that your pet is microchipped and immunised at least 21 days before you’re due to set off.
Never make any decisions about moving abroad without considering your pet’s wellbeing first and you should always seek advice before making any decisions or travelling.
Aside from your vet, you can also speak to the Pet Travel Scheme helpline who will be able to provide you with in depth information and advice about transporting your pet abroad. You can call them on +44 (0)370 241 1710. Full contact details can be found on the UK Government website.
